2021 Capitol Report, March 17

INTRO:

THERE IS IN-FIELD FIGHTING BETWEEN SENATE DEMOCRATS IN THE LEGISLATURE DURING THIS FINAL HOMESTRETCH.  KOB 4’S CHRIS RAMIREZ EXPLAINS FROM THE ROUNDHOUSE.

TIME: 1:23                           OUT: STADNARD

WITH JUST HOURS AWAY FROM THE END OF THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION.. THERE IS A MAD DASH TO GET IT ALL DONE.

OR IS THERE?

THIS MORNING, SENATOR ANTOINETTE SEDILLO LOPEZ OF ALBUQUERQUE ACCUSED SENTATOR JOSEPH CERVANTES OF LAS CRUCES OF INTENTIONALLY HOLDING UP MORE THAN 100 BILLS.

CERVANTES IS THE CHAIRMAN OF SENATE JUDICIARY AND HE ALONE CONTROLS WHAT BILLS WILL BE DEBATED IN HIS COMMITTEE AND WHICH WON’T.

CERVANTES DENIED HE IS PLAYING GAMES WITH BILLS AND SAYS LIMITED TIME SIMPLY DOESN’T ALLOW FOR EVERY BILL TO BE HEARD.

TODAY GOVERNOR MICHELLE LUJAN GRISHAM SIGNED HOUSE BILL 255– A SWEEPING BIPARTISAN REFORM BILL THAT ALLOWS FOR HOME DELIVERY OF ALCOHOL. THE BILL ALSO MAKES LIQUOR LICENSES MORE AFFORADABLE AND ALLOWS FOR SUNDAY MORNING LIQUOR SALES AND PROHIBITS THE SALES OF MINATURES FOR OFF-SITE CONSUMPTION.

ALSO MAKING NEWS IN THE ROUNDHOUSE– THE NEW MEXICO SECRETARY OF STATE HAS SET TUESDAY JUNE 1ST AS ELECTION DAY TO REPLACE FORMER CONGRESSWOMAN DEB HAALAND.

HAALAND RESIGNED HER SEAT THIS WEEK AFTER THE U.S. SENATE CONFIRMED HER AS SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR IN THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION.

INSIDERS IN THE REPUBLICAN, DEMOCRATIC AND LIBERTARIAN PARTIES WILL MEET THIS WEEK TO NOMINATE A CANDIDATE FOR THAT JUNE 1ST ELECTION.

FOR THE NEW MEXICO NEWS NETWORK, I’M CHRIS RAMIREZ, KOB4.
