Santa Fe, NM – July 31, 2014 – Join us for the annual Santa Fe County Public Safety Recruitment Day on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Sam’s Club parking lot (4201 Rodeo Rd). All public safety departments will be on hand to answer questions about their specific field.


The New Mexico Motor Transportation Police and New Mexico State Police Step up Patrols on State Road 136

Dona Ana County- Last week, Mexican customs officials dramatically reduced the availability of lanes at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry for transit by used vehicle exporters. The southbound lanes, which used to be open from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., now have been closed to such traffic except from 9:00 a.m.-noon. This resulted in a chokepoint at the port of entry and a backup of traffic that extended for nearly three miles. In addition to virtual gridlock, the traffic congestion created serious safety risks to vehicles and pedestrians alike.

New Mexico State Police Arrest Suspect Responsible for Telecommunications Blackout in Cibola/McKinley Counties

Cibola County- On May 7, 2014, the New Mexico State Police was contacted by Century Link in reference to an April 21, 2014 incident regarding the theft of copper wire and damage to fiber optic cables. This effected Cibola and McKinley counties. For the duration of nine hours, internet and some long distance services were disrupted putting business and local residents at risk. The location that was burglarized was located off State Road 117 in Cibola County.


ATF OFFERS $5,000 REWARD IN NEW MEXICO STOLEN FIREARMS INVESTIGATION

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Mexico State Police today announced an award up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for stealing 48 firearms from a large Conex metal container located in Arabella, New Mexico.


Media Invited to the New Mexico State Police Static/Demonstration Display

Santa Fe – A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (C.A.L.E.A.), will arrive June 8, 2014, to examine all aspects of the New Mexico State Police’s policy and procedures, management, operation, and support services. A key part of the on-site assessment is a demonstration of various department vehicles on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at the Department of Public Safety Law Enforcement Academy, 4491 Cerrillos Road Santa Fe, NM. This display of agency vehicles and equipment is an important part of the overall process of becoming re-accredited.


New Mexico State Police C.A.L.E.A.(Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) Reaccreditation

Santa Fe – The New Mexico State Police is proud to announce our upcoming Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (C.A.L.E.A.) reaccreditation on-site assessment. The accreditation program requires our agency to comply with over 400 state-of-the-art standards covering four basic areas: policy and procedure, administration, operations and support services. The New Mexico State Police first became accredited on July 26, 2008.


State Police to Participate in DEA National Take Back Day

Santa Fe County–On Saturday, April 26, 2014; State Police will be partnering up with the Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Take Back Day. This is a program that focuses on removing potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation’s medicine cabinets. This program will give the public the opportunity to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances to law enforcement offices for destruction.


Telephone Scam

Otero County– New Mexico State Police in Alamogordo have received two calls from concerned citizens regarding an unknown caller indicating they are with State Police and requesting the citizens send a check or money order to cancel a warrant for their arrest.


New Mexico State Senate Confirms Pete N. Kassetas as Chief of the New Mexico State Police

Santa Fe–The New Mexico State Senate today unanimously confirmed Pete N. Kassetas as Chief of the New Mexico State Police. Kassetas was selected by Governor Susana Martinez to serve as Chief of the New Mexico State Police in August 2013. Chief Kassetas will serve as the twenty-first Chief of the New Mexico State Police.


Motor Transportation Police is Awarded Top Five for the Innovations in American Government Award

New Mexico’s Smart Roadside program, an advanced commercial vehicle enforcement screening system, has been recognized as one of the “Top 5 Innovations in Government” by the Ash Center at the Harvard Kennedy School. This state-wide program automatically identifies high-risk commercial vehicles making roads safer and enhancing New Mexico’s Motor Transport Police Division roadside operations.


Shots Fired at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell NM

Chaves County- At approximately 8:11 a.m. New Mexico State Police and local authorities responded to the Berrendo Middle School. At this time, children are being bused from the school to the Roswell Mall. We ask that parents report to the mall and avoid the school at this time.


New Mexico State Police Commences the 87 Recruit Class

Santa Fe County-The New Mexico State Police is proud to announce the commencement of the 87 recruit class. The class starts the twenty two week adventure on Sunday January 5, 2014 with thirty-nine Recruits starting the academy. The State Police Academy is a paramilitary, live in, boot camp.


State Police Adds Twenty Nine New Members to its Family

Twenty-two weeks of the toughest training are completed. The 29 graduating recruits have been born into New Mexico State Police Officers.


Former Teacher Charged with Unlawful Relationship with a Student

Lea County- On December 12, 2013, New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau obtained a warrant for arrest for a formal Jal High School teacher, David Proctor (52), for one (1) count of Criminal Sexual Penetration of a Minor.


State Police Respond to a Fatal Crash in Colfax County

Colfax County– On December 16, 2013 New Mexico State Police responded to a single vehicle rollover crash which occurred on State Road 56 at milepost 3 which is just east of Springer NM. Four people were involved in the crash.


Same Officer Arrests Same Subject for 6th DWI in San Juan County

San Juan County- On December 2, 2013 at approximately 9:07 am; New Mexico State Police Officers in San Juan County were conducting an early morning DWI saturation patrol. An Officer conducted a traffic stop on a white Ford Ranger pickup truck on County Road 6100 in Fruitland, New Mexico. The vehicle was pulled over for a hazardous equipment violation.

Traffic Stop Leads to Dope Load and Arrests in Chaves County

Chaves County- On November 20, 2013, K-9 units along with uniform officers from Roswell District were conducting an interdiction operation in Chaves County NM. At approximately 9:35 am, a traffic stop was made on US 285, mile post 120 near Roswell NM, on a silver 2013 Hyundai four door rental car.

Santa Fe County- The officer involved in the shooting last Thursday, November 7, 2013 that occurred in Santa Fe has been identified as Oliver Wilson.

Chaves County‐ On Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 8:48 pm a New Mexico State Police Officer was patrolling in Roswell. The officer observed a silver Cadillac traveling at an extremely fast rate of speed.


Update 1 to New Mexico State Police Officer Involved Shooting in Santa Fe NM

Santa Fe County- On Thursday, November 7, 2013, a NMSP officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for erratic driving. The vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit was ensued.


2nd Update to New Mexico State Police Officer Involved Shooting in Santa Fe NM

Santa Fe County- The vehicle began to actively and persistently flee the officer as he attempted to pull the vehicle over. A dangerous pursuit ensued. At times, speeds reached up to 87 miles per hour in a residential neighborhood. In order to successfully stop this pursuit and to prevent injury or death to innocent motorists; the officer conducted a pursuit intervention technique maneuver (PIT).

Officer Involved Shooting in Chaves County

Chaves County- On October 21, 2013 at 8:57 am; A New Mexico State Police Investigation’s Bureau Sergeant came upon a motorists assist involving a female subject standing on the side of US 285 at mile post 87 (NB). The Sergeant made contact with the woman. The Sergeant was advised by the woman her significant other was further up the road.


State Police Still Recruiting for 87th Recruit Class

Santa Fe NM- The New Mexico State Police is still looking for qualified candidates to fill the 87th Recruit Class. The 87th is scheduled to begin, January of 2014. The last testing date for this class has been moved to Friday, October 25, 2013.


State Police End Vehicle Pursuit in San Juan County

San Juan County- On October 4, 2013 at 7:24 am; New Mexico State Police Officers from the District 10, Farmington District, were conducting an early morning DWI and sales to intoxicated subjects sting. The operation was held at the 32 mile marker on US 64, near Shiprock NM.

Lincoln County — On Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at approximately 6:30 PM; New Mexico State Police responded to the scene of a single motorcycle crash near State Road 368, mile post 11 in Arabela NM.

Medanales man arrested with heroin, marijuana, guns and cash

The Region III Drug Enforcement Task Force recently completed an investigation into heroin trafficking in Rio Arriba County, which resulted in the arrest of a Medanales man. The Region III Drug Enforcement Task Force is made up of Agents from the New Mexico State Police, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, and Santa Fe City Police Department.


State Police Officer Rescues Family from Chaves County Flood

Chaves County — On Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 7:00 am; NMSP Dispatch in Roswell received a call from the Pecos Valley Regional Communications Center regarding assistance needed with distressed residents on River Road. River Road is located ten miles east of Roswell.


New Mexico State Police Dive Team Recover Drowned Subject from Elephant Butte Lake

Sierra County —On Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 7:23 pm; New Mexico State Parks contacted the New Mexico State Police Dive Team to assist in searching for a submerged subject at Elephant Butte Lake.


Wanted Felon Arrested by State Police in Gallup

McKinley County — On Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 12:55 pm; State Police Officers, working with Agents from NMSP Investigations Bureau and the Adult Probation and Parole, went to an address in Gallup, New Mexico. The Officers went to pick up Sammy David Armijo (36) of T or C New Mexico.


State Police Assist in Averting Major Crash on I-10 in Dona Ana County

Dona Ana County- On Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at approximately 11:20 PM, State Police dispatch in Las Cruces received a call of a wrong-way driver eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near milepost 123, approximately 15 miles west of Las Cruces.


NEW CIRRICULUM ADOPTED BY THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY BOARD

SANTA FE- The New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Board today, unanimously approved the adoption of a sixteen week academy for Basic Police Officer Training. The curriculum is currently twenty-two weeks.


State Police Investigate Alcohol Involved Fatality in Socorro County

Socorro County- On Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at approximately 3:37 pm; New Mexico State Police officers responded to the scene of a two vehicle crash on Interstate 25 near mile marker 167, south of Bernardo, NM. The crash involved two vehicles. One was a green Toyota Camry and the second was a white Chevy truck. The white Chevy truck, suspect vehicle, fled the scene and was located approximately six miles north of the crash scene.

Two Off Duty State Police Sergeants Assist in California Dust Storm Crash

Santa Fe County- On Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 1:37 pm (Pacific Time); two NMSP sergeants were returning back to New Mexico from California on Interstate 40 and drove up on a multiple vehicle crash. This crash was due to a large dust storm that swept across I-40. The crash was near Newberry Springs, CA. A total of eight vehicles were involved.


Narcotics investigation results in the arrest of a repeat criminal offender and the seizure of a half pound of methamphetamine

A month-long investigation into a methamphetamine trafficker operating in Santa Fe and Sandoval Counties recently concluded. The operation was conducted by the Region III Narcotics Task Force, which is made up of Agents from the New Mexico State Police, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department, and Santa Fe City Police Department.


NMSP Aircraft (ABLE 6) Rescues Lost Hiker in Gila Wilderness

Catron County- On Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 3:05 pm; New Mexico State Police District Eleven (Socorro District) was informed of a lost hiker in the Gila National Forrest.


UPDATE-State Police Respond to Body Located in Ravine off I25 Mile Post 318

San Miguel County- On Thursday, August 1, 2013; New Mexico State Police Officers were dispatched to I25 mile post 318 at 3:55 p.m. The call was in regards to a human body being located in a ravine.


UPDATE- Woman Found on the side of I40 on August 10, 2013 Identified

Bernalillo County- On Aug. 10, 2013 New Mexico State Police responded to an unconscious female on I-40 near mile marker 129, near Route 66 Casino. The female was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. Witnesses on scene described seeing the female fall from a commercial vehicle and hit the road as the vehicle was traveling approximately 65mph. The female subject sustained severe brain trauma and other numerous injuries. She currently is in critical, but stable condition.


29 Pounds of Marijuana seized at Roswell Residence by NMSP Agents

Chaves County- On Tuesday, August 13, 2013, Agents with the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau executed a search warrant at #1 Oak Road, Roswell, NM. As a result of the search, Agents seized approximately 29 lbs of marijuana and a firearm.


Special Investigations Hosts Responsible Retailing Meeting

On Friday, August 09, 2013, the Special Investigations Division (SID) of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety hosted a meeting at the Toney Anaya building in Santa Fe that brought together stakeholders to work together toward making New Mexico safer through promoting responsible retailing of alcohol.


Agents of the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau Investigate Stabbing in Valencia County

Valencia County-On Thursday, August 9, 2013 at approximately 9:37 PM; Bosque Farms Police Department received a call from a Kimberly West. Ms. West advised BFPD that she had been stabbed during an altercation at her ex-boyfriends residence on Zamora Lane in Peralta NM. BFPD Officers made contact with Ms. West at her residence on Hypear in Peralta. She was found to have suffered numerous wounds and is bleeding severely. Due to her injuries, Ms. West was Air Lifted to UNMH in Albuquerque. BFPD requested that NMSP, IB take over the investigation.


Agents from the New Mexico State Police Invesigations Bureau Investigate SFPD Officer Involved Shooting

Santa Fe County- On Thursday, August 8, 2013, at 11:57 pm; New Mexico State Police Agents were called to investigate a Santa Fe City Police Officer involved shooting. Currently, there are two crime scenes.


Chaotic Vehicle Pursuit comes to an End in San Juan County

On Monday, August 5th 2013; New Mexico State Police officers out of the Farmington State Police District were dispatched to assist Albuquerque State Police District officers with a vehicle pursuit which had been terminated near the 102 mile marker on US 550. The pursing officer observed a child in the suspect’s vehicle.


State Police Agents Arrest Subject for Impersonating a Peace Officer in San Miguel County

San Miguel County- On Wednesday, August 7, 2013; agents of the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau were traveling on State Road 104 in San Miguel County. SR 104 runs east to west between Las Vegas and Trementina NM.


State Road 63 in Pecos Re-Opened

Santa Fe County- Today, August 7, 2013 at 12:00 p.m.; State Road 63 in Pecos NM will be reopened. SR 63 had been shut down a few weeks back due to seasonal rains that created mud slides and flooding on the road.


State Police Investigate a Fatal Crash in Taos County

Taos County- On Sunday, August 4, 2013 at 2:43 pm; New Mexico State Police Officers responded to a single vehicle roll over on US 285, mile post 390 near Tres Piedras.


State Police Respond to Body Located in Ravine off I25 Mile Post 318

San Miguel County- On Thursday, August 1, 2013; New Mexico State Police Officers were dispatched to I25 mile post 318 at 3:55 p.m. The call was in regards to a human body being located in a ravine.


State Police Investigate a Double Fatal in Eddy County

Eddy County- On Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 8:18 p.m.; State Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of US 285 and Blevins Road in Eddy County regarding a two vehicle crash. One of the vehicles involved was a 1989 commercial motor vehicle driven by Geoffrey Springer (26) of Minnesota. The other vehicle, a 2002 Mercury sedan, was driven by Anan Olvera (20) of Artesia New Mexico and her passenger Christina Olvera (19) of Artesia NM.


State Police Investigate Triple Fatal On US550 North of Cuba NM

Sandoval County- On Monday, July 29, 2013 at 6:52 p.m.; New Mexico State Police Officers were dispatched to a single vehicle roll over on US 550, mile post 85. As a result of this crash, three subjects were declared deceased upon arrival of Officers.


State Police Investigate a Single Vehicle Fatal in Dona Ana County

Dona Ana County- On July 27, 2013, at approximately 3:56 a.m.; New Mexico State Police were dispatched to State Road 136, mile post 2, near the Santa Teresa Port of Entry regarding a single vehicle roll over. The female driver of the vehicle was ejected from her vehicle and died on scene.


State Police Vehicle Pursuit in Rio Arriba County Yields Two Arrests

Rio Arriba County- On Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 2:53 pm; Espanola District State Police dispatched an Officer to the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs in regards to a larceny. The responding Officer was advised the suspect vehicle, a black Chrysler 300, had fled the location. As the Officer was traveling to the location, he observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on US 285 at a fast rate of speed. A short vehicle and foot pursuit ensued, ultimately ending with the apprehension of two suspects.


New Mexico State Police to Push Messages Through Nixle

Santa Fe County‐ At the beginning of 2013; the New Mexico State Police started the ground work in a community messaging service. The name of this system is Nixle. This system pushes alerts and advisories to the cell phone numbers via text to the individuals that sign up for it. It will also send messages to an email address.


Potential for Flash Floods in the Pecos River Canyon (Santa Fe and San Miguel Counties)

Santa Fe County--According to weather reports, the week of July 14-20, 2013, pose a monumental threat of flash flooding for residents who reside in the Pecos River Canyon.


Search and Rescue Mission Activated in Cabresto Lake Area near Questa NM-UPDATE

Taos County—On Friday, July 12, 2013 at around 5 am; the remaining hikers were safely taken off the mountain by New Mexico Search and Rescue members.

Taos County—On Thursday, July 11 2013 at 12:00 a.m.; the Espanola State Police Office received notification of an overdue camping party consisting of two adults and eight foster children. Suspicious Letter Closes Down Santa Fe UPS Field Office

Santa Fe County--On Thursday, July 11, 2013; New Mexico State Police Officers responded to the Santa Fe UPS (United Parcel Service) field office regarding a suspicious envelope. State Police Officers arrived at the UPS location at 9:11 a.m. Officers immediately evacuated the UPS building and set up a parameter. The State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was then dispatched to the location.

63 Year Old Los Lunas Man Drowns at Ute Lake

Quay County- On July 9, 2013, at approximately 8:50 a.m., New Mexico State Police were notified of a drowning at Ute Lake State Park. Walter Bell (63) of Los Lunas, New Mexico was found floating in the lake by his wife after launching their boat in the water. Beatrice Bell drove away from the launching dock to park their vehicle. Mrs. Bell returned back approximately fifteen minutes later.

The driver was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and drug possession. The initial reason for the traffic stop was for speeding. On Wednesday, May 15, 2013; the same officer conducted a traffic stop on US 550, mile post 139 on a blue GMC Sonoma truck. The driver was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and DWI (2nd offense-aggravated). This arrest was a result of the driver being pulled over for speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.

COLFAX—New Mexico National Guard, New Mexico State Police, New Mexico Department of Transportation, Curry County Sheriff’s Office, and Rescue teams conducted a successful consolidated effort late last night to save the lives of a family stranded in an 8-10 foot snow drift along U.S. 56 near Springer during a powerful snowstorm.

Corrective Action Taken on Missing Evidence

Santa Fe — The Department of Public Safety, Forensic Laboratory Bureau recently discovered that five pieces of evidence were missing from two separate burglary cases. The evidence had been seized by Farmington Police Department and the Santa Fe Police Department during their investigations.


Three Arrested After High Speed Pursuit

Quay County – State Police arrested Gilbert Moreno (27), Jason Decarlo (23) and Samantha Farmer (30) this afternoon after a vehicle pursuit. Moreno and Decarlo fled from NMSP in a vehicle that had been stolen out of Albuquerque the day before.


Pair of Thieves Arrested with Eight Stolen Vehicles

Albuquerque/Los Lunas — State Police arrested Daimon Lanckriet (18) and Augustine Aquiar (26) in Albuquerque on Tuesday for eight counts of Unlawful Taking of Motor Vehicle along with Receiving or Transferring Stolen Vehicles, Possession of Burglary Tools and Tampering with Evidence. Both were taken into custody without incident during and after a traffic stop near the intersection of Broadway and Rio Bravo.


Murder Suspect Arrested

Albuquerque — State Police arrested Dumonta Terrell (18) in Albuquerque yesterday on a murder warrant out of Rock Island, Illinois. Terrell was taken into custody by State Police Tactical and Investigations Bureau personnel at a residence on Rosalind Street.


Deadly Weekend Due to Lack of Seatbelt Use

Santa Fe — Since Thursday of last week, the New Mexico State Police has investigated six fatal traffic crashes, resulting in eight fatalities. The failure to wear seatbelts has been proven to lower the risk of dying in a crash. The survivability rate of vehicle occupants involved in these crashes would have been greatly improved if seatbelts were used.
