Capitol Report 1/31/22 – Free College Proposal Passes First Hurdle



Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is backing a proposal designed to deliver tuition-free college to every New Mexican who wishes to pursue higher education.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is lending her support to Senate Bill 140, sponsored by Senator Liz Stefanics and Representative Joy Garratt, which is intended to expand tuition-free public college to more students in New Mexico.

Higher Education Department Secretary Stephanie Rodriguez outlines the proposal

The bill was approved by the Senate Education Committee 5 to 3 and will now be considered by the Senate Finance Committee.
