Sierra Club intervenes at PRC on SPS case, early retirement of Tolk Coal Plant

2028 closure would benefit climate, local communities and ratepayers

Last week, Sierra Club intervened in Xcel Energy’s Southwestern Public Service rate case to support retiring Texas-based Tolk coal plant ahead of schedule. The case will be overseen by the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) and is the first step in Xcel’s efforts to retire Tolk by 2028 — four years earlier than the company’s previous goal. Xcel estimates that the early retirement of Tolk will ultimately save customers $100 million.
