This is Jason Espinoza with today’s capitol report.
President Pro Tem Mimi Stewart has introduced legislation, Senate Bill 193, to appropriate twelve and half million to the reading materials fund. During the 2023 Legislative Session, the Reading Materials Fund was amended to align the use of the fund with New Mexico’s transition to structured literacy programming.
Amanda Aragon, Executive Director of NewMexicoKidsCAN, a local nonprofit organization, is a strong supporter of the legislation.

Senate Bill 193 unanimously passed its first committee, the Senate Education Committee, earlier this week, and now heads to the Senate Finance Committee for consideration.
